MEDJUGORJE PILGRIMAGE October 11-20, 2009 -- $1999
with Renaissance Pilgrimages Spiritual Director: Fr Al Winshman SJ, Director, Marian Renewal Ministries
October 11–20, 2009, $ 1999 – Medjugorje: special savings
The tiny village of Medjugorje has attracted millions of pilgrims from all over the world for over 28 years. A place of prayer and conversion, there are countless numbers of people who have had their lives changed by a pilgrimage here. From healings (both spiritual and physical), to a deepening of their faith, those who travel here on pilgrimage will tell you there is no place else on earth where the presence and peace of God and His Mother are so deeply felt. To have such an apparition happening during our time is truly amazing.
Our special fall pricing includes round-trip airfare from most major U.S. cities and all airport taxes and security fees. Also includes overnight accommodations in Dubrovnik or Frankfurt..... No hidden extras!
We are pleased to announce that our spiritual director for this pilgrimage will be Fr. Al Winshman, S.J. Fr. Al entered the Jesuits in 1952 and consecrated his life to "Jesus through Mary" in the Demontfort consecration. Fr. Al was ordained in 1965 and taught high school and college chemistry and physics and served in a variety of marriage, retreat, and renewal ministries. He joined the Marian Movement of Priests in 1979 and entered full-time retreat ministry the following year. He experienced a deep inner calling in 1984 to live and proclaim the Gospel-centered message urged today by Our Lady of Medjugorje. His retreatants invited him to their parishes and from this his Marian Renewal Ministry rapidly developed. Since 1988 his Provincial superior has formally assigned him each year to this Ministry to be available to parishes throughout the U.S. and the English-speaking world.

Oct 11, Day 1 – Afternoon departure from Newark to our European gateway. Normally this is Frankfurt but may vary according to dates. Dinner & breakfast served on board.
Oct 12, Day 2 – Morning arrival in Europe and then we board our flight to Split. We are met in Split this afternoon by our local English-speaking guide and drive by motor coach along the Adriatic coastline to the village of Medjugorje, where we check in to our guesthouse and have dinner.
Our hosts, Marinko and Dragica Ivankovic, do everything possible to make our stay here a memorable one. They regard their home as our home during our stay here. It was Marinko who used to drive Vicka to school everyday when the apparitions were first reported, and it was his wife Dragica who happened to be in the nearby city of Mostar and let Fr. Jozo (then the parish priest in Medjugorje) know about the reports of the apparitions. Hopefully they will share their heartfelt testimony with our group as they have in the past.
Marinko leads us in the rosary each morning, which is a beautiful way to start the day. Here you get a feel for what Medjugorje was like when the apparitions first began–before they became world-famous.
Oct 13-18, Days 3-8 – For some of us this will be the first visit and for others it will be a return trip, but it is always a special feeling to be in this holy place. Our day-to-day activities may vary but will be centered on the daily English Mass in the morning and the Croatian Mass and Rosary in the evening.
We have a short walk "through the fields" to St. James Church. This is the same path the visionaries took as they ran from Apparition Hill to the church in breathless excitement.
One day we will climb Apparition Hill together, praying the rosary as we ascend to the site of the apparitions.
We will hear talks by whichever visionaries happen to be in the village at the time– there are usually two or three there at any time. There are also inspirational talks by such priests as Fr. Svetozar and others.
Another day we will climb Cross Mountain, where the 34-foot concrete cross was erected in 1933 to commemorate the 1900 years since the crucifixion of Our Lord. This, in itself, was truly an act of faith since the concrete had to be hauled up the mountain on foot to build the cross.
We also have the opportunity to attend Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament in the church and many other planned and unplanned experiences that Our Lord and Our Lady have for those who come to Medjugorje. And you are always free to opt-out of any planned activities for your own personal time.
Oct 19, Day 9 – This morning we bid farewell to Marinko and Dragica and travel to the ancient city of Dubrovnik, the "Pearl of the Adriatic".
We will have the opportunity to celebrate Mass in the Church of St. Blaise including the blessing of the throats and then stroll around this fascinating walled city that sits over the Adriatic. Dinner and overnight in Dubrovnik.
Oct 20, Day 10 – This morning we fly from Dubrovnik to our European gateway (usually Frankfurt or Paris) and then change planes for our flight back to the U.S. We arrive in the U.S. that evening.
Included in this tour: • Round trip air transportation from Newark via regularly scheduled airlines. • Ground transportation from Split to Medjugorje and return via our own private bus. • Local English-speaking guides in Medjugorje. • Accommodation in a family-run guest home in the village within walking distance of St. James Church. • Breakfast and dinner daily. • A priest will accompany each group. The Church & Medjugorje:
The reported apparitions at Medjugorje are understandably something of a "hot button" issue with some. There is so much false information circulating or such poor journalistic effort that it is no wonder that people are confused. Of course I also read that the moon landing never took place, Elvis is still alive, etc. Who is that said "believe nothing of what you hear and only half of what you see"?
Let us put the record straight, as far as we know it:
1. The apparitions have neither been approved nor dis-approved. The investigation has been taken out of the hands of the local Bishop and is now in the hands of Rome. As of April 8, 2008 the Holy See itself has taken full authority over the alleged phenomona.
2. Official Church-sponsored pilgrimages are not allowed as that would give the impression that they were approved.
3. Groups organized by lay persons or private organizations are allowed to go to Medjugorje. Furthermore, priests are encouraged to accompany these groups to provide spiritual guidance.
Having traveled to Medjugorje for over 19 years, we have witnessed many miracles, both physical and spiritual. The latter are the most impressive. When you see people coming back to the Church after 20 or 30 years, going to daily Mass, etc. we have a hard time believing that this is the work of the Evil One.
We do not presume to know what the final decision will be, but we will abide by that decision. It is probable that the decision will not be made until after the apparitions have ended, and then perhaps quite some time later. Remember, it took a good while before the famous apparitions at Lourdes and Fatima were finally approved.

SHRINES OF MEXICO & GUADALUPE December 8-13, 2009 -- $1599
Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe -- St Michael's Well -- Our Lady of Ocotlan -- Blessed Miguel Pro -- Venerable San Sebastian -- Church of the 5th Apparition -- Our Lady of Remedies -- & More...
Spiritual Director: Fr. Al Winshman, S.J. Director, Marian Renewal Ministry, 319 Concord Rd, Weston MA 02493-1310 Tel: 781-788-6839 Email: winshman@juno.com, Web: www.MarianRenewal.com
Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City will be the highlight of our pilgrimage. Our Blessed Mother is also lovingly known by the title of Our Lady of the Americas, and this is the most important Marian shrine in the Western Hemisphere. We will pray at the Shrine for all of our needs, especially for the serious times we are now facing in our country. We will also have the opportunity to visit some lesser-known shrines in Mexico, experiencing life in the smaller town of Ocotlan, the larger colonial city of Puebla, and the bustling metropolis of Mexico City.
Dec 8, Day 1: We depart this morning from the U.S. to Mexico. Upon arrival in Mexico City this afternoon we will be met by our local English-speaking guide and travel by our own private bus to the old colonial city of Puebla. Set at an elevation of over 7,000 feet in a wide valley between snow-capped volcanoes, Puebla is blessed with year-round spring-like climate. It's considered the cradle of Mexican cuisine, having produced some of the country's classic dishes–the intricate mole sauce, and chiles en nogada. Our first Mass together will be celebrated by our priest, Fr. Al Winshman SJ, at the beautiful 18th century Jesuit Church of Espirito Santo, commonly known as La Compania, located near our hotel. Dinner and overnight in Puebla.
Dec 9, Day 2: We are privileged to spend three nights in Puebla, the cradle of Catholicism in the Western World. A private Mass will be celebrated this morning in the magnificent Cathedral of Puebla. The beauty of this Cathedral rivals any we've seen in Europe. Also near our hotel is the incredible Rosary Chapel, in the Church of St. Dominic, which is staggering in its beauty. Every square foot is covered with sculpted, painted images, including the magnificent dome at the top.
We'll visit the Church of Saint Francis where we can venerate the incorrupt body of Venerable San Sebastian, a Franciscan monk who died in 1631 at the age of 90. We can pray and leave our petitions here. Venerable San Sebastian is also the patron saint of travelers! This afternoon we'll have free time to explore Puebla, the largest colonial center of any in Mexico, home to so many extravagantly built mansions, convents, and churches that it has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Puebla is also known for its vividly painted Talavera tile, marvelous food and colorful pottery. Dinner and overnight in Puebla.
Dec 10, Day 3: This morning we will travel 25 miles north of Puebla to the state of Tlaxcala. In the history of the Church in Mexico, the province of Tlaxcala is highly regarded as a territory of great significance and an area highly favored by God. The smallest of Mexico's provinces, and the first place anywhere to hear the word of God proclaimed in the New World, it is considered by many to also be the most beautiful; known for its green valleys and gentle-rising mountains, all lush with farms and flora and its gentle people. In May of 1990, at Mexico City's shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, beatified three children of Tlaxcala, who had suffered martyrdom–Cristobalito, Antonio and Juan.
Also in Tlaxcala is the Shrine of San Miguel del Milagro. The Archangel Michael appeared in an interior vision to Diego Lazaro de San Francisco on April 25th 1631, the feast of St. Mark, and gave him a message; "Know my son, that I am Saint Michael, the Archangel. I come to tell you that it is God's will and mine, that you tell the neighbors of this village and of its surroundings, that in a ravine, which is made of two hills and is in front of this place, can be found a spring of miraculous water for all infirmities. It is under a big boulder. Don't doubt what I tell you, nor put aside what I command you." This spring of water is known to have exceptional healing and exorcistic powers. The water, which has continued to flow off and on over the years was recently dry. The Pastor of the Sanctuary of San Miguel del Milagro, has stated, "When the people do penance, the well returns. When they fail to do penance, it dries up."
This afternoon we will drive to the nearby town of Tlaxcala. Surrounding the lovely zocalo are several outdoor restaurants where we can have lunch. Among the many attractions in this area are the Cathedral of San Francisco, the first altar in the new world, the first pulpit, the baptismal font used by Cortez and the burial place of the first Christian martyrs.
Just over a half mile from the town center is the famed Basilica of Our Lady of Ocotlan. The Sanctuary of Ocotlan was constructed after Juan Diego Bernardino (not the same Juan Diego of Our Lady of Guadalupe) discovered a miraculous statue of Our Lady in a nearby burning tree. The statue now resides in this beautiful Basilica. Our Lady told Juan Diego Bernardino that "through my image I will give many blessings and favors".
At the time Our Lady appeared to Juan Diego Bernardino she also took him to an unknown spring by a ravine of oak trees. As revealed by the Blessed Virgin Mary, this fount of grace, still flowing abundantly has extraordinary healing powers. In those days all those who drank from the nearby well were immediately cured from a disease which had decimated the village. Witness and experience the faith in a miraculous event from 400 years ago and at which many miracles are still attributed today. We will visit the miraculous well, a short walk from the Basilica and collect water. Return to Puebla for dinner and overnight.
Dec 11, Day 4: Following breakfast this morning we'll depart Puebla and travel north towards Mexico City. Ten minutes outside of Puebla on the old highway to Mexico City is the small town of Cholula. From the distance you can see the impressive Church of Our Lady of Remedies perched atop an ancient pyramid, the largest in the New World, much larger in volume than the pyramids in Egypt. Those who wish can climb the steps to the church. The others can stay below and browse the simple shops or relax in one of the small restaurants.
After re-boarding our bus, we'll continue on to Mexico City where we'll enjoy free time for lunch and a visit to the monumental Metropolitan Cathedral. Our next stop will be the Church of St. James built from stones of the Aztec temples and where Juan Diego was baptized Later this afternoon we'll make an introductory visit to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe to say hello to our Blessed Mother. We will have a more in-depth and leisurely visit tomorrow. Dinner and overnight in Mexico City.
Dec 12, Day 5: The highlight of our pilgrimage is the visit to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and we will spend most of our day here celebrating this great feast day. Although now near the center of this city of 22 million, the shrine was once barren countryside. It is here in the year 1531 that Our Lady appeared four times to a simple peasant, Juan Diego (canonized a saint by Pope John Paul II in 2002), and asked that a shrine be built on the spot. When he reported this to the bishop, the bishop asked for proof. Later Juan Diego was led to a spot where Castilian roses–which do not exist in this climate–were blooming and gathered them up in his cloak (or Tilma, as it is called). When he brought them to the bishop, he was amazed–but not just at the roses. There on the Tilma was an image of Our Lady. We will have time to view the Tilma, which still bears Our Lady's imprint after over 478 years, and hangs over the main altar of the Basilica. We also have the opportunity to attend High Mass here in celebration of the anniversary of the apparitions. Located in the Basilica is a gift shop offering various items related to this important apparition site. Those who wish may climb Tepeyac Hill to the monastery at the top.
Later this afternoon we'll drive to nearby Tulpetlac, a suburb of Mexico City. This is where Juan Diego lived with his uncle and the site of the Church of the 5th Apparition of Our Lady. The church is built over the former home of Juan Bernardino, Juan Diego's uncle. This is where Our Lady appeared to him and he was instantly healed of smallpox. Although Juan Diego was supposed to meet with the Bishop with a message from the Virgin Mary that day, he was very worried about his uncle and decided to take a different route to seek a priest to administer the Sacrament of the dying for his uncle. Our Lady appeared to Juan Diego and asked him where he was going. When he told her, she informed him that his uncle had already been healed. Although not well-known, there is a healing well at the small Church of the 5th apparition where we are free to collect water. Many healings have been attributed to this water, and we were told by the Sacristan recently that this church has been declared a world healing center by the Vatican.
Dec 13, Day 6: This morning we will have a private Mass of thanksgiving at the Church of the Holy Family, where the remains of Blessed Miguel Pro are kept. In the period of 1910 and through the 1930's the Catholic Church was persecuted by the Mexican government much the same as it was by the Marxists in Soviet Russia. Churches were confiscated, priests and nuns executed, and the practice of the faith (even the ringing of church bells) was outlawed in public. Miguel Pro gained a reputation as traveling in various disguises to avoid capture while celebrating Mass, performing weddings and funerals, and anointing the sick. After being captured in 1927 he was executed before a firing squad, holding a rosary in one hand and a bible in the other. Pictures of his execution are placed near his remains in the church, a reminder of the high price he paid. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1988. Later this afternoon we board our return flight to the U.S.

You will see the confessional where Padre Pio spent innumerable hours with a multitude of pilgrims, direct-ing them on their journey toward God. Enjoy a breathtaking view of the Cargano Peninsula and a visit to the Grotto of Michael the Archangel. Six different popes, St Francis and at least four other saints have knelt in prayer at this grotto, seeking the protection of St Michael. A pano-ramic view of the ocean and the surrounding countryside awaits you at this most celebrated shrine of early Christianity, a shrine consecrated by St Michael himself in 490. Return to San Giovanni for devotions, reflection, and a restful overnight.

We then continue on to the great Marian shrine of Loreto to visit the Holy House of Nazareth and the beautiful Madonna of Loreto. More than 50 popes have made a pilgrimage to the house transported by angels to this hill in central Italy in 1294. Tra-dition has it that this is the house in which Mary first prayed the Mag-nificat, in which Jesus grew to manhood, and in which the Holy Family lived. Continue to Assisi for dinner and overnight.
Monday May 3, Day 8 – Assisi Visit the tomb of St Francis. Explore the quaint hilltop birthplace of St Francis that still retains something of the atmosphere of the early 1200s, the period when St Francis began his ministry. Contained within the huge 13th-century Basilica are many of the saint's possessions and a series of frescoes depicting his life. You may kneel before the crucifix from which Jesus spoke to St Fran-cis, asking him to rebuild His church. It was in St Mary of the Angels Basilica where St Francis spent most of his life. Here we visit the Chapel, Portiuncola, the rose bush, and the cave where the saint re-tired for prayer. Stroll the medieval streets of the compact little town. After stopping at an outdoor cafe with a view of an ancient Roman temple, we go to the Church of St Clare to see the saint's incorrupt body. The foundress of the Order of Poor Clares followed the teach-ings of St Francis by living a life of poverty and humility. We will visit these two saints' tombs before dinner and retiring for the evening. Tuesday May 4, Day 9 – Assisi-Sienna We are off to the beauti-ful town of Siena, the birthplace of Saints Catherine and Bernardine and one of Italy’s loveliest medieval cities. Here we will stroll the Piazza Del Campo, one of Italy’s finest squares and visit the Cathedral and the Basilica of St. Francis, containing the miraculous consecrated hosts that remained intact since 1730. Here are some of the activities you'll be shar-ing with our fellow pilgrims: Each morning at 10am we assemble at St James Church for the English-language Mass (Feast days and Sundays English Mass is at Noon). Follow the path up Apparition Hill where the visionaries first encountered Our Lady. Touch and pray be-fore the cross that commemorates the location where Mary first ap-peared to the visionaries. Each evening at 5pm, we will join the villag-ers and pilgrims to pray the rosary. The apparition takes place at 5:40pm, and then stay on for Croatian Mass. Don't miss on Tuesdays and Saturdays Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and on Fridays Veneration of the Cross in the Church. Each evening during Croatian Mass, there is the Blessing of the Sick and blessing of the items you have with you.Our guide will arrange meetings with the visionaries at their own homes provided that they are in Medjugorje during your trip, and pending their availability. We will have the opportunity to climb Krizevac Mountain, where in 1933 the villagers built a 30' high cross on the anniversary of Jesus' crucifixion. Visit and pray at "Blue Cross", which is a place of great healings and graces- a very special place at the base of Apparition Hill.
Sunday May 9, Day 14 – Medjugorje-USA After an early breakfast and heartfelt farewells, we leave by motor coach for Dubrovnik Airport (Spilt or Sarajevo) for return flights home.
